I am frequently asked the question “How can I increase the shareability of my content?” The answer is first and foremost create content worth sharing and second make the content easy to share.
1. Provide Value
Keep in mind that for your content to be shared it needs to provide value. Recommend starting with a fact finding mission (keyword exercise) to determine what content would best engage your visitors. Start by answering the question of how you can provide your reader with value?
2. Social Sharing Widgets
Make it easy for your readers to share your content by adding social sharing widgets to your site. You can add them individually or use a widget such as ShareThis that combines them all into one widget. For WordPress I use DigDig and the Jetpack Socialize plugins.
3. Social Markup
Next you need to ensure that if a page is shared that it engages people who see it. By adding markup (e.g. for Facebook it is OpenGraph fb:og tags) which tell the social platform what the page is about, which image to share etc. Generally speaking posts with images have a higher engagement rate than those without.
While this will set you up for success I would not stop there. You should proactively market each piece of content on your site. Recommend running a report to show pages which convert well but have not yet been socially validated and posting these pages.
Remember that your website should be the hub of your content marketing efforts. Read more on my Content Marketing Guide.
