Were it only for an embrace

could her distance have been a gift
forcing him to be set adrift
if only she had wrapped her arms around
surely he would have settled down

soothing a complicated man
should have be her master plan
but no embrace was felt
how could his heart be melt

her sleep deprived glances
told the story of their chances
why does she let him intimidate her
when his plan was to date her

was it the hour that causes
those several awkward pauses
as he inches towards the door
desiring an excuse to see her more

now parked in the driveway
looking for the right words to say
does he go back to knock again
or does he let it end

fast forward to a mile away
exhausted he calls it a day
still hanging on the chance
they will find romance

standing on the sundial
he searches the crowd for her smile
but when the bridge passed two
he knew that they were through…
