For many when you log into Klout you will find a message indicating that the Topic pages are now live.

You’re one of the first users selected to preview Klout’s new topic pages. Click on any topic link across the site to see top influencers, the most influential content, and much more coming soon!

Hawaii Klout Topical RankingThe opening screen shows top influencers in a given topic for the last 90 days.  You can also select top +K recipients in the topic as well.  There is also 3 additional menu items “Best Content”, “Latest Activity” (which is disabled as of this post date) and “Perks”.

Top Influencers

The top influencers are not ranked by Klout score although most scores appear to be in the top 5% of Klout scores (based on stats obtained at kLokal Hawaii Klout Ranking)

Best Content

In addition to ranking the most influential, Klout is also featuring influencers who generate the most influential content on each given topic.  Not only is Klout featuring the most influential people about each topic, but they are featuring the most influential content generated on each topic as well.

If you are the majority of Klout users who do not yet have access to the topical pages, no fear, you can see trending topics on kLokal (http://klokal.com/trending-topics/).  The Hawaii based ranking site has actually listed topical pages since March 2011.  Topics most commonly assigned to Hawaii users are:

Ideas for Klout enhancements

I have several ideas for new features and spinoffs.  I realize that much of this may not aid in the overall business objectives but if Klout
could help organize a group of passionate developers who wanted to volunteer time developing fun social assets and mashups it would
certainly further the visibility and marketing objectives.  Here are a few ideas I have started and would love to turn over to the community to collaborate on:

Klout Localization

It would be fantastic to not only browse by topics, but also browse by location.  When you regionalize Klout, a score of 50 becomes quite high (95th percentile in Hawaii) and having a good Klout score becomes achievable.  I launched a site which ranks all of the top Klout scores in Hawaii which gets a lot returning daily traffic with people checking how they rank, there are a lot of blog posts where people screenshot if they make it to the top 50 etc.

With localization in place, you would then be able to drill down to topics by location which would allow local influencers to be recognized.  This would also allow to assign a regional ranking (such as #1 highest score in XXX) etc.

Klout Mobile

It has been
mentioned in the forms already, it would be great to have a mobile app which can serve more than just checking your score, but also would have sharing features. Example, often times in my classes or out at bars people ask me what is new in TechnoMarketing and one of the tools/metrics I share is Klout, people immediately are curious if they have a score and what it is.  It would be great to have a tab in the Klout App where you can enter in a Twitter handle and it not only show their score, but also tweet them how to sign up,.

Klout/Foursquare Mashup

It would be fun to create a mobile app mashup where when you check into an event or bar etc. it tells you who the highest Klout score in the room is and what # you are in the pecking order.  Albeit a self-serving app, it would highly encourage people to look to increase their score (much like Klout Perks does).

More Klout Badges

It would be great to have more Klout badges, naturally I would love a Klout Squad badge to go with my Klout OG badge :)

Klout, the Standard of Social Influence

There has been much discussion around the launch of a localized social mashup I developed using Klout, the standard of social influence.

It is received with both excitement by innovators and criticism by the usual naysayer crowd.  Although in its current state, Klout is not perfect, it is a fantastic initiative and a really impressive start!   Its important to put into perspective how technology advances, search engines in the early days were flawed but years later they are now a standard for finding relevant information.  As an early adopter (First Tweet from Hawaii @Rob) I have been able to spot trends and I am confident that Klout will play a significant role (albeit potentially evolved role) in the near future.  As Tom Webster of Brand Savant put it “while I don’t know that ‘online influence’ is where (Klout) are going to end up, they are going to end up somewhere useful – I truly believe that.”  Well said.

I think the most important thing to realize is nobody is suggesting that we make friends or hire consultants based on their Klout Score. You are in for trouble anytime you allow a formula to be the only factor in an important decision, that said, an algorithm can pick out information that humans may gloss over. Example: After reviewing Hawaii Klout, there were a number of influencers who I had not crossed paths with and now follow and am engaged by… thank you for uncovering them Klout!

As the #1 “Search Engine Optimization Expert” in Google I understand algorithms intimately and how easily they can be gamed and I am able to look at the data as if it was the opinion of someone rather than the official ranking of social influence.

The same way that a PageRank or MozRank assigns a value to a website, a Klout Score assigns a value to an aggregate social profile. In the early days search engines based their rankings on things like keyword density (the social equivalent to frequency) and still use inbound links (the social equivalent to @ mentions) to determine a page/domains value. As search engines have evolved they have become more keen to contextual factors and do not award keyword rankings solely based on the PageRank of a domain.

I have had my head down a bit and haven’t chimed into the conversation as much as I wanted because I am in the process of launching a next generation site which will be announce shortly.
